School Prefect's Junior Orientation

Dear Reader,

It has been about nearly a few months since I last post in my entry. I would like to share my experiences regarding a programme that I organised a few weeks ago. Just a day before the school holidays, which is during the fourth of June, I and my friends of the school prefect’s board had organised an orientation programme for the junior prefects ranging from Form 1 to Form 3.
Before the activity, we had made many preparations, but sadly due to the lack of time, we were unable to fix most of the things right. If there was someone to blame, then the first person should be me. This is because I am the honourable chairman of this activity. It is a shame that we only started preparing when there is only a month’s time left. Bad luck again shrouded us endlessly like a daunting fog that is reluctant to leave, the exam is just around the corner and we faced the difficulty of postponing this activity. Due to the difficulty of the motivator to change his time into the time that suits us only in this school holidays, we were unable to change our time into the time that we want. The teachers were also too bossy and egoistic. They limited our every move and every activity. Huh, I knew that pointing the finger to any person other than me would not help. However, the truth is, what can I do now other than grumbling and releasing every inch of anger in these letters that I typed… …
Okay, fine! Let’s talk about the purpose of the activity rather than “grieving” and “moaning” about the loss and the failure. What’s loss is loss, retribution may not even help you feel better. Actually, the main aim of this activity is to build up relationships between senior and junior prefects, not forgetting to teach them how to become a more dedicated and disciplined prefect in their duties. We must show to them that being a prefect is fun and challenging. This was our objective. A week before the activity, we had meetings that were probably decision making parts crucial to our one day activity. These parts could be nasty too! When a decision cannot be made, arguments and troubles will go nuts, even though you have your meetings that were obviously unhelpful enough. Being a leader, I learned that many decisions should be made by your own. The members can only become your references as the true decision maker and power source is you! Luckily, we were cooperative enough to overcome the disaster.
For many days before the activity, I had troubled sleep for 5 days continuously. Having no experiences of organizing an activity, I was worried of it even though it looked pretty alright to them. My fears haunted me badly at the night before the activity. I nearly had insomnia but managed to fall asleep before awaking again at dawn. I expected some bizarre, uncontrolled, chaotic events that will happen and prepared for the worst. The troubles vanished at soon as I arrived at school. To my surprise, it went on right. The breakfast was delayed because the canteen set up late. The ice breaking activity was quite well and the simulation of sport checking in school was a total blast. It was the greatest one in this activity. The rest of the time before lunch was used for briefing from the teachers. After lunch, we had a motivation speech from Dr Lee of the UNITAR University. He was unable to attend due to bone fractures on his leg. He was replaced with Mr Lau, our school counsellor himself. After the talk, the participants enjoyed the Great Situation Challenge, which was the idea from one of our teachers. (Although we do not like the idea very much) The tiny bit of time was used to enjoy ourselves as we sing songs and played until it is time to go.
Well, not bad at all, right? Maybe a bit boring at first but it is okay overall. Actually, I think that there is a lot more to be improve if we have been given much more time to plan about the activity. I am not too satisfied about it, as if something’s missing. What I knew, is that next time, before any activity takes place, we must start planning it regardless of its time. The lesson that I learn, is that time is the most important element in every activity. Without sufficient time, we cannot do anything well. That’s all for now, bye!
